The Organizational meeting for the SC District Exchange Club was held on Tuesday, October 27, 1936 at the Jefferson Hotel in Columbia, SC. The President was D.W. Campbell of the Columbia Exchange Club. The delegates were:

At that time, they adopted the State District Constitution and elected the following Officers:

Treasurer Y.W. Scarborough, Charleston Exchange Club
The first District Convention was held November 23-23, 1939 at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston, SC. In 1947, the Convention was held at the Caesar's Head Hotel in Caesar's Head, SC. At that time, there were 28 active clubs, and 153 Exchangites attended the convention. The St. Andrew's Parish Club was the largest club with 90 members. The total membership was at 851 Exchangites, and the dues were $1.00 per member per year. In 1948, 400 people attended that year's convention banquet held at the Citadel. In 1958, the first recorded Club of the Year was awarded to the Greenville Exchange Club. At the 1966 convention held in Orangeburg, the District Directors were given divisions to monitor, help, and grow. At that time, the state was separated into 6 Divisions. In 1969, due to the civil unrest and the curfew in effect at that time in Charleston, the 29th Annual Convention, held May 3rd, was limited to the Business Meeting. 28 official delegates representing 17 clubs, as well as 31 other Exchangites, were present. District membership was at 1,230. The Isle of Palms Club had experienced a gain of 33 new members, with 25 of those being brought in by Exchangite Dennis P. Clarkin. He was awarded the 25 member pin from National, only the 3rd one awarded.
1948 and 1967 saw District's largest years with 36 clubs. 1972 saw District's largest recorded membership of 1,371 Exchangites. As of March 31, 2005, the District had 18 clubs and 962 members. The SC District has had 2 National Exchange Presidents: Harold A. Petit (1951-52), and Robert B. Scarborough (1969-70), both from the Exchange Club of Charleston.
